Zanzibar - Sauti za Busara festival
C’était au Royaume-Uni dans les années 1980, alors qu’il était engagé avec le mouvement anti-apartheid, que Yusuf Mahmoud est inspiré pour la première fois par le pouvoir de la musique africaine pour sensibiliser et renforcer la solidarité.
En 1998, Yusuf déménage en Tanzanie, où il aide à mettre sur pied le Festival international du film de Zanzibar (1998) et l’Académie de musique Dhow Countries (2001). En 2003, il fonde Busara Promotions; une ONG célébrant le pluralisme culturel et offrant des emplois dans une industrie musicale d’Afrique de l’Est qui est connectée et en échange avec d’autres régions. Depuis 2004, Yusuf Mahmoud est directeur du festival de musique panafricain Sauti za Busara [Sons de la sagesse] à Zanzibar, en Tanzanie, chaque année en février.
It was in the United Kingdom in the 1980s, when he was involved with the anti-apartheid movement, that Yusuf Mahmoud was first inspired by the power of African music to raise awareness and strengthen solidarity.
In 1998, Yusuf moved to Tanzania, where he helped set up the Zanzibar International Film Festival (1998) and the Dhow Countries Music Academy (2001). In 2003, he founded Busara Promotions; an NGO celebrating cultural pluralism and providing employment in an East African music industry that is connected and in exchange with other regions. Since 2004, Yusuf Mahmoud has been the director of the Sauti za Busara [Sounds of Wisdom] Pan-African Music Festival in Zanzibar, Tanzania, held annually in February.
